Facing South: UGA Sorority Rush

Hundreds of hopeful young women walk Milledge Avenue in groups from historic home to historic home a few days before their first day of class as they meet the sisters of the University of Georgia's 17 sororities. The hopeful pledges awake at 5am to get ready for their five days of four rounds of meeting with the 17 sororities. The nervous masses approach doors of chanting women who are competing with their neighboring sororities for the prettiest, most likable girls to add to their exclusive groups. The approximate amount a new member will pay for her first semester at the school is $1,337 and closer to 3 grand if she lives in one of the sorority houses.
More than 20% of the females at UGA are members of a sorority. The first sorority at the school dates back to 1921 and, for many, it is a southern legacy to be a sorority sister at a large state school.
